r/worldnews - Humpback Whales Have Made a Remarkable Recovery, Giving Us Hope for the Planet. A recent study on humpbacks that breed off the coast of Brazil and call Antarctic waters home during the summer has shown that these whales can now be found in the sort of numbers seen before the days of whaling.

The population of Humpback whales declined from ~27000 in 1830 to only 450 whales in the mid-1950s. Protection led to a strong recovery and the current population is estimated to be at 93% of its pre-exploitation size. Source
