Websites that detect ad-blockers to stop their users from reading webpages could be illegal under European law

well sounds like he has a point under the law. Though i doubt it will effect a lot. Many websites have the pop ups over their use of cookies due to eu regs, i suspect they will now just include "and we will scan for adblockers"
